Abstract

Water properties and its relation with agricultural compounds affect post-harvest procedures, being correlated to sorption isotherms. Guggenheim–Anderson–de Boer (GAB) model is usually used to describe isotherms due to the physical aspects of its parameters. Thus, this work aimed to acquire desorption isotherms of tobacco leaves (Nicotiana tabacum L.) with initial moisture content of 87 % (w.b.), and to determine thermodynamic properties of this process. Equilibrium moisture content (Xeq) of tobacco leaves was obtained by dynamic method in different temperatures (15, 25, 35, 45 and 55 ºC) and relative humidities (10, 20, 40, 60 and 75 %) of the air. Experimental data of Xeq was fitted to GAB model, in which adequately represented the isotherms. Xeq increased with relative humidity increment and decreased with temperature increase at a constant value of relative humidity. Monolayer moisture content increased and remaining parameter values of GAB model decreased with temperature increase, indicating that air condition affect the interaction between multilayer and free moisture. Thermodynamic properties calculated were activation energy, enthalpy, entropy and Gibbs free energy. Activation energy was 0.3172 kJ kg-1. Remaining properties decreased with equilibrium moisture content increase.
