Playing Tetrastichus howardi in pupae of Diatraea saccharalis of different ages
Abstract
Tetrastichus howardi ( Olliff , 1893) ( Hymenoptera : Eulophidae ) is a larval and pupal parasitoid insects , mainly Lepidoptera , and is considered a promising biological control agent . The development of breeding techniques is crucial for the implementation and improvement of biological control using natural enemies . The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of age of pupae of Diatraea saccharalis ( Fabricius , 1794 ) ( Lepidoptera : Crambidae ) on parasitism and development of T. howardi . The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with five treatments and five replicates , each being represented by a group of ten pupae of D. saccharalis individualized , totaling 50 pupae per treatment. Borer pupae with 24 , 48 , 72 , 96 and 120 h of age were exposed to parasitism by three females of T. howardi in glass tubes ( 10 × 1.5 cm ) . Females of T. howardi were removed after 24 h pupae kept at 25 ± 2 ° C , 70 ± 10 % relative humidity (RH ) and photoperiod of 14 h . The number of parasitized pupae and the emergence and progeny of T. howardi in pupae of D. saccharalis were not influenced by host age , but the life cycle of T. howardi was lower in pupae at 24 h of age and greater in pupae 120 h . Generally , sugarcane borer pupae aged between 24 and 120 h are suitable for multiplication of T. howardi parasitoid in the laboratory .
