Abstract

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the morphological and growth responses of Brachiaria and Paspalum fasciculatum Brizantha grown for 21 days under waterlogged conditions. The low oxygen availability due to waterlogging significantly reduced the relative growth rate and net assimilation Brachiaria, as well as biomass allocation to roots after 14 days of flooding. In P. fasciculatum, reductions in the rate and biomass allocation were significant only after 21 days of flooding. In the studied species, the morphological adaptations were clearly evidenced by the formation of large numbers of adventitious roots, which probably contributed to their survival to hypoxia. These results indicate that P. fasciculatum species are more tolerant to flooding when compared with Brachiaria.
