Crude protein levels in the diet of juvenile Brycon amazonicus
Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of crude protein levels on the growth performance and body composition of juvenile Brycon amazonicus. Four experimental diets were formulated to include increasing levels of crude protein (CP) at 30, 35, 40 and 45%. Each diet was fed to three groups of juvenile Brycon amazonicus, initial stocking weight of 3.2 ± 1.3 g, for 60 days under a completely randomized design. Fish were randomly stocked (n = 50 per tank) in 12 circular tanks of 500 liters volume at 28°C. They were evaluated for individual weight gain (WG), apparent feed conversion rate (AFCR), specific growth rate (SGR), protein efficiency ratio (PER), and body composition. At the end of the experiment, the 30% CP showed a lower performance than the remaining three tests. SGR, PER and fish body moisture were not affected by the dietary treatments (P > 0.05), WG and AFCR were significantly better (P < 0.05) when fish were fed diets with more than 35% CP. Nonetheless, AFCR was higher in fish fed diets with more than 40% CP. Therefore, juvenile Brycon amazonicus should be fed diets containing between 40 to 45% CP for satisfactory growth.
